Cinemagraph

A cinemagraph I made for my Digital Media Production class. I just put together a little setting with my Anastasia music box, my fairy statuette, and my jewelry standee on a table in front of my window, propping the music box on a book. The book is "Alice in Wonderland & Philosophy", which I chose specifically because I wanted to include it in the composition, but the lighting didn't work out for that. Then I took a video of the music box playing, then edited the time so it loops perfectly and masked out the elements that were not supposed to be moving in the final product, i.e. the curtains blowing in the wind or the jewelry swinging on the stand.

We were supposed to wait til class next week to edit our videos but I was a bit too excited. Hopefully it uploads here. Tumblr keeps giving me an error message whenever I try to post it up there, and it's getting frustrating. I hope you like it!

Cinemagraphs are still photographs in which a minor and repeated movement occurs. Cinemagraphs, which are usually published in an animated GIF format, can give the illusion that the viewer is watching a video.

They are commonly produced by taking a series of photographs or a video recording, and, using image editing software, compositing the photographs or the video frames into a seamless loop of sequential frames, often using the animated GIF file format in such a manner that motion in part of the subject between exposures (for example, a person's dangling leg) is perceived as a repeating or continued motion, in contrast with the stillness of the rest of the image.

The term "cinemagraph" was coined by U.S. photographers Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck, who used the technique to animate their fashion and news photographs beginning in early 2011.
